Foot arthritis is an inflammation and swelling of the cartilage and lining of the joints in the foot, generally accompanied by an increase in the fluid of the joints. Each foot has 33 joints that can be affected. In addition, the joints of the tarsus bones of the ankle where they connect to the metatarsal bones of the foot can be affected as well. Symptoms include early morning stiffness, limitation in motion of joints, recurring pain or tenderness in any joint, swelling, redness or heat in the joint.

Treatment: Physical therapy, exercise, medication, and the use of orthotics.

Common Nail Problems

The most common toe nail problems are ingrown nails, thickened nails and black end nails. Many common nail problems can be prevented by wearing the right shoes and trimming nails properly.

An ingrown nail is the result of a nail growing into the skin that surrounds it. This often occurs at either edge of the big toe. Ingrown nails are caused by improper trimming, inherited nail deformities, injuries, fungal infections, or pressure. Ingrown nails can cause pain at the tip of the toe or all the way to the base of the toe. The pain is often worse while walking. An ingrown toe nail may lead to infection, inflammation, or amore serious condition. If the nail is infected, you may see pus or redness; that would be when you should come in and see one of our doctors.

Our doctors will trim the corner of the nail or remove one side of the nail to relieve symptoms and to access the infected area. Severe infections may require antibiotics and temporary or permanent removal of a portion of the nail. A local anesthetic would be used for this procedure.

Thickened nails can be the result of injuries, pressure from shoes, fungal infections or conditions such as diabetes, psoriasis or vascular disease (possibly appearing brittle, thick or yellow). The nail may feel painful when pressure is put on it. Eventually, the nail will loosen and fall off.

Our doctors may trim the nail and if infection is present will prescribe topical or oral antifungal medication. If pain persists the entire or part of the nail may need to be surgically removed. Do not attempt to remove the nail yourself.

A black-end nail is usually caused by sudden or repetitive injury to a toe. This may occur during sports that involve running or stopping quickly or if a heavy object falls on the toe. If your toe is black and blue, but not injured, see one of our doctors immediately.
