Diabetes and Your Feet

Diabetic Foot Care - New YorkFoot problems are a big risk for people with diabetes. At Foot Care of New York, our podiatrists check our patients' feet often for signs of pressure or open wounds. Our New York licensed foot doctors, Dr. Michael Iannello and Dr. Neil Zwiebel encourage patients to take steps to keep their feet clean and healthy.  As licensed podiatrists, they prescribe and professionally fit orthotics to help increase circulation in the feet. Dr. Iannello and Dr. Zwiebel are compassionate caring foot doctors who are exceptionally qualified to perform foot surgery for diabetes related foot problems, but only do so when all other non-surgical methods have failed.

Diabetes and Your Feet

It is extremely important for people with diabetes to monitor and carefully manage their blood sugar levels.  Uncontrolled blood glucose levels can lead to serious and severe foot complications, including amputation.  Learn more about Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes in our Patient Education Library.

For people with diabetes, an open wound, something as simple as a blister on the foot from wearing shoes that are too tight can lead to dangerous complications. Diabetes decreases blood flow, so injuries are slow to heal. When a wound is slow to healing, the risk for infection rises. For people with diabetes, infections spread quickly. Read more about diabetes-related foot problems in Foot Care of New York's Patient Education Library.

Prevent Diabetic-related Foot Problems

If you have diabetes, inspect your feet every day. Look for puncture wounds, bruises, pressure areas, redness, warmth, blisters, ulcers, scratches, cuts and nail problems. Get someone to help you inspect your feet, or use a mirror. You should also:

  • Inspect  your feet regularly for sores, blisters, and red areas
  • Keep feet clean and dry
  • Keep wounds clean to prevent infection
  • Wear proper fitting shoes
  • Wear orthotics as prescribed to increase circulation to the feet

Complications of Diabetic Foot

The highly skilled licensed foot doctors at Foot Care of New York are highly experienced in the full spectrum of diabetic foot complications. From contact casting techniques and custom orthotics to wound care and foot or toe surgery if necessary. Dr. Iannello and Dr. Zwiebel are experts in advanced treatments for foot complications from diabetes, including:

  • Nervous system damage (neuropathy) is a common consequence of diabetes. Neuropathy is a complication that may cause diabetics to lose feeling in their feet or hands. The loss of feeling and blood circulation can lead to foot sores (ulcers).
  • Peripheral vascular disease is a complication of diabetes that causes poor circulation in the feet.  Because of the lack of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients, wounds do not repair well, causing minor problems to turn into big problems, including infection.
  • Foot and toe deformities are a common complication of diabetes.  Hammertoe is a type of toe deformity that occurs when stabilizing tissues breakdown and cause the toes to move out of position.  Hammertoe makes the skin vulnerable to pressure ulcers.
  • Charcot (pronounced "sharko") Foot is one of the most serious foot problems. Charcot Foot warps the shape of the foot when the bones fracture and disintegrate. Yet, people continue to walk on it, even in the case of a broken bone, because it does not hurt.
