Walk Your Way to Wellness

About 67 million men and women in this country have discovered how walking is one of the most fun, natural, and inexpensive ways of keeping your body and feet in top shape. Walking can be done almost anywhere, anytime, year around. Foot Care of New York is New York City's headquarter for foot health, professional foot orthotics, and preventing foot problems while walking.

Benefits of Walking

Whether you are walking for fitness, pleasure, or work, you are doing your whole body a favor.  Walking can help to:

  • Control weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels – A brisk walk can burn up to 100 calories per mile or 300 calories per hour.
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness. As an aerobic exercise, walking gets the heart beating faster to transport oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the muscles.
  • Make the heart and lungs grow more efficient.  A regular walking regimen can help reduce blood pressure and resting heart rate.
  • Walking is even a central element of heart medical rehabilitation. Recovery from many medical conditions, including heart attack, is facilitated by a regular walking regimen.
  • Create an overall feeling of well-being, and can relieve depression, anxiety, and stress by producing endorphins, the body's natural tranquilizer. A brisk walk can help relax you and stimulate your thinking.

Long-term benefits of walking include:

  • A stronger heart and lungs, and improved circulation
  • Prevention of heart attacks and strokes
  • Weight loss
  • Blood pressure management
  • Boosted metabolic rate
  • Cholesterol & blood sugar management
  • Improves muscle tone in the legs and abdomen
  • Reduced stress and tension
  • Reduced arthritis pain; stop bone tissue decay

Precaution

If you are more than 40 years old and have any problems with weight, respiration, blood pressure, pulse rate, or cholesterol, check with your doctor before beginning a walking regimen. The same goes for people with diabetes, smokers, or people with pre-existing injuries or a family history of heart problems.
